The Dollar Tree Corporate office confirmed Wednesday its goal to open its new Shawnee store Feb. 28

In December a Dollar Tree sign was mounted at a store site in Kickapoo Plaza.

“Dollar Tree continues to grow and we are proud to be part of the Shawnee community,” Kayleigh M. Painter, Dollar Tree’s investor and media relations manager, said.

The new 8,910 square-foot Dollar Tree store is in Kickapoo Plaza, at 600 W. Independence (Kickapoo and Independence) in a suite on the north side of Homeland that's been empty for years since Eckerd Drugs closed down.

A store of this size typically employs 12 to 20 associates, Painter said.

“Interested applicants can apply online at or in person at the store location closer to the opening date,” she said.

Though Painter did not confirm whether the new site is going to be in addition to or replacing the existing store at 4903 N. Union, its call to hire more employees suggests both stores will operate in town.
