This year, seven churches from seven denominations have again joined together to present a unique weekly worship experience during Lent. Over the last several years the Ecumenical Community Lenten Worship series has brought together Christians from different traditions in a shared worship experience and opportunity for fellowship.
Each week during Lent and Holy Week, a different church hosts the joint worship service and fellowship meal. The services begin at noon each Thursday during Lent and on Good Friday during Holy Week.
The public is invited to share in both the short worship service and the meal. Donations are taken to help the host church cover the expenses of the meal. The worship and fellowship meal can both be enjoyed during a normal lunch hour for those who are working.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, so the series will begin at noon Thursday, March 7, with Emmanuel Episcopal Church hosting the first worship and fellowship meal. The church is located at 501 N. Broadway.
St. John Lutheran Church, 3610 N. Union, will be providing the worship and fellowship meal on Thursday, March 14.
The series continues with the service and fellowship meal hosted by First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1625 N. Broadway, on Thursday, March 21. University Baptist Church, 2515 N. Kickapoo, will host on Thursday, March 28. Wesley United Methodist Church, 302 E. Independence, hosts on April 4. St. Benedict Catholic Church, 632 N. Kickapoo, will host on Thursday, April 11.
United Presbyterian Church, 120 N. Broadway, will host the Good Friday Service that concludes the worship series on Friday, April 19.
This is an opportunity for Christians from all denominations to come together in Christian unity during this season and to promote a better understanding of the traditions of other denominations.
