In honor of Child Abuse Awareness month, many representatives from area departments and local organizations dedicated to child welfare gathered for the Child Abuse and Awareness Prevention Luncheon Tuesday at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center in Shawnee.
Hosted by the Pottawatomie County Child Welfare Collaborative and the Family Support Task Force, the luncheon was also an awards ceremony for two foster families and a foster child graduating from high school.
Associate District Judge for Pottawatomie County, Tracy McDaniel, presented awards to couples Ian and Shelia Brown and Jarrod and Elizabeth Moore for their work with foster children and other foster families.
Both couples were presented with the Judge Glenn Dale Carter Advocate of the Year Award.
An unnamed foster child who is graduating high school was not present but was awarded the Donald E. Wheeler Memorial Award and $250 scholarship.
KFOR journalist Lacey Lett was the guest speaker at the event and spoke about her franchise series "A Place to Call Home," which features children in state care seeking to be adopted.
Each segment airs every Tuesday at 6 p.m.
