The Shawnee News-Star sports team has won several awards in the annual Best of GateHouse contest — #DoJournalismWithImpact.

Overall, The Shawnee News-Star took third place for Best Sports section.

In the Sports Writer of the Year competition, Sports Editor Adam Ewing took second place while Publisher Kent Bush took third place.

Ewing's collection of sports stories included “Stargell uses competitive drive to build a legacy,” a story about an Earlsboro basketball player. Another story looked at high school football and the way the Seminole Chieftains honor Native American Traditions before kickoff. Ewing's third story judged was a feature about Robert Swift, a former Thunder player.

For Bush, the collection of stories included “Emily's Moment: Chesser scores in heartwarming game,” a story about a Dale basketball player. Also judged was “A touching touchdown: Hamilton plays through pain of losing his father to cancer,” a story about a Seminole football player. Bush also had a sports column judged, “There is nothing better than a rain-soaked football field.”
