Nathaniel Atchison was born Jan. 20, 1952, to John and Anna Mae Atchison in Eufaula.
Nathaniel Atchison was born Jan. 20, 1952, to John and Anna Mae Atchison in Eufaula. His childhood was filled with hunting rattlesnakes and fishing catfish with his brothers as well spending time with his grandmother, affectionately known as “Big Mama.” He was baptized at Wayland Baptist Church in Eufaula. While in Eufaula, he attended the local elementary and high school, where he graduated with honors. While attending Wayland Baptist Church, Nathaniel met the love of his life, Linda Sue Broadous.
In 1970, Nathaniel and Linda married and moved to Ada, where they both would be attending East Central University. Nathaniel graduated in 1973 with Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting with minors in mathematics and computer science, all within three years. In 1975, Nathaniel received his CPA certification, and after working for Peat Marwick Mitchell for seven years, he later accepted a position with Finley Cook P.L.L.C in April of 1982 in Shawnee. Shortly there after, he became a partner in the auditing division of the firm. He was member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants.
Nathaniel has been a faithful member of Union Missionary Baptist Church since moving to Shawnee in 1982. Nathaniel truly had a servant’s heart, whether it was serving as an usher, working in the kitchen, helping with vacation bible school, leading a men’s bible study, singing in the male chorus, being a part of the prison ministry, being a member of Gideons International, and volunteering in other areas of the church and within the community. His spirit truly exemplified Joshua 22:5 “… to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” While he was a member, Nathaniel was recognized as a deacon and later was ordained as an elder. In 2018 he had the honor of the fellowship hall at Union Missionary Baptist Church being named after him.
He was processed in death by his parents John and Anna Mae Atchison and five brothers; Willie, John W., Donald Ray, Leon and Roy Atchison.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 49 years Linda Atchison, his son Johnathan Atchison (Lora), daughters; Stacey Thomas (Furnell) and Brandi Atchison. Brother Gary Atchison, and sisters; Mattie Carter (Joseph), and Felicia Jackson; grandchildren, Sonia Krochak (Zach), Jordan, Payton and Mya.
A memorial service will be held on May 18, at 1 p.m. at Liberty Baptist Church. A repast will follow at the Nathan Atchison Fellowship Hall at Union Missionary Baptist Church.
