The Rev. Doyal Elston Davis, of Shawnee, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2019, at the age of 78.

Doyal was born to William Otis and Grace May (Hopper) Davis on July 21, 1940, in Chandler. He grew up the youngest of four brothers and attended Perkins High School.

Following high school, Doyal served in the U.S. Army and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he earned a Bronze Star.

Following Doyal’s military service, he settled in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he earned a master's degree in history. It’s there Doyal met his long-time partner, Jack B. Mathies. Doyal worked for Kamehameha Schools for more than 20 years as an education management professional. Upon his retirement, he relocated back to Oklahoma to be near family and friends.

In Oklahoma, he immersed himself in God’s work, becoming a deacon at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Shawnee, on June 20, 2009.

Doyal loved helping and entertaining others, he volunteered at House of the Lord, and Heartland Hospice. He had a passion for acting, participating in “Little Women” and “Guys and Dolls” at Shawnee Little Theatre and “God’s Little Acre” while in Hawaii.

Doyal is survived by his brother, James Daniel Davis; and eight nephews and a niece.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers William “Bill” Ray Davis and Kenneth Eugene Davis; and nephew Daniel Morgan Davis.

A memorial service will be at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Shawnee, on June 26, at 10 a.m. Doyal’s ashes will be interred at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Columbarium.
