I love to garden but it's starting to get hot outside, do you know of any events coming up about gardening?

Many times we focus on planning in the early spring with workshops and home and garden shows.  There are year round programs about gardening, if you watch for them.

I am going to share some personal background.  In my early career, I had the privilege to work as an intern through a partnership with OSU and TLC Garden Center the summer before my college graduation.  Upon completing my degree, I was hired by Linda and Charles Shackelford as a retail greenhouse employee and began my hands-on education.  Sharing this now, many of you know this family as Charles is from Shawnee, and Linda is from Tecumseh.

As a young college graduate, I had much to learn.  Fortunately, Charles and Linda were more than willing to teach (every day), and although retired, they are still involved with education for gardeners and the industry.  If you are interested in an 'inside garden day' in August in Oklahoma, check out this opportunity to sit in the AC and enjoy the garden conversations. It is just a little road trip to Stillwater.

Please join us at the Plant Materials for the Oklahoma Green Industry Conference scheduled for Thursday, August 8 at the Wes Watkins Center in Stillwater, OK. A variety of topics, taught by both academics and industry leaders, will be highlighted at this year's conference. The conference is designed to interest both the commercial grower/retailer as well as gardening enthusiasts. Registration is $40.00 and lunch is included with registration. More information about the conference can be found at http://www.hortla.okstate.edu/about-us-1/giving/outreach/workshops. Sign up by the end of July.

Many people have the opportunity to travel during the summer months.  If you have that option, look in areas where you will be travelling for gardens, arboretums, and botanical gardens.  Some will have indoor areas as well as shady outdoor parks.  Check out the Myriad Botanical Gardens or OKC Zoo Botanical Gardens in Oklahoma City.  The Gathering Place in Tulsa is highly recommended, and soon we will have the brand new Scissortail Park in OKC, with its Grand Opening scheduled for Sept 27-29, 2019.

While I am on events, now is a great time to plan for county fair entries.  Our Pottawatomie County Free Fair will be Sept 4-7th.  Our horticulture exhibition area does have AC, on the south end of the arena building.  Stay cool when you can and happy gardening!
