Dexter was born March 31, 1952, to the late Johnny Pickens and Earlene (Roberts) Pickens in Gene Autry.  A graduate of Douglass High School in Ardmore, Dexter enlisted in the U. S. Army July 28, 1974 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal upon his honorable discharge, January 23, 1976.
After courting the love of his life and best friend her for nine years, Dexter and the former Cynthia Thomas were married July 2, 2011, at Ardmore.  They celebrated their anniversary earlier this month.
Dexter was raised in the Baptist Church, and was baptized at an early age.   He was an enthusiastic and dedicated member until failing health prohibited his attendance.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Dexter enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.  Some of his favorite hobbies were doing auto mechanic work, fishing, cooking and watching baseball.  Dexter truly lived life to the fullest and enjoyed the simple things in life.
Following a period of ill health, Dexter passed away peacefully Friday, July 12, 2019 at Ardmore’s Mercy Hospital at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 11 days.
Welcoming Dexter to his heavenly home were his parents, Johnny and Earlene Pickens, a sister, Diana Harris, and stepson, Larry Connlley, Jr.  Survivors that will forever cherish his precious memory include his wife, Cynthia Pickens, his son, Dexter Pickens, Jr. and wife Rominsha, his daughter, Kimberly Scott, and stepdaughter, Janeka Wrenn; also his eighteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren; a host of aunties, uncles, nieces nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the funeral home.
