Smoke billowed from the bay of Shawnee's Fire Station No. 3 on MacArthur Street Monday, where firefighters on Red Shift participated in a Mayday training exercise. Utilizing a Rapid Intervention Team, the training included smoking up the entire apparatus bay area for crews to search for and rescue a downed firefighter in the simulation.

Captain Scott Killgore said the training involved different methods of rescue.

“We then opened the bay doors , which created a realistic looking structure fire,” he said. “Some passersby thought the building was actually on fire.”
