A new dance studio will offer free classes at its grand opening this weekend.

Visitors to Relevé Studio’s grand opening can sample dance classes, make crafts and register for classes at a discount. The studio will offer classical ballet, ballroom and social dance, liturgical and creative movement classes to dancers of all ages.

Andrea Johnson, founder and dance instructor, said she is excited to finally have a space of her own after 17 years of teaching. Johnson has studied and taught classical ballet since childhood, and later picked up ballroom dancing at Oklahoma Baptist University.

“It’s been a dream of mine to do dance instruction on this level for a long time,” Johnson said. “I started out teaching in my parents’ basement.”

Johnson has lived in Shawnee for eight years and taught dance classes this summer at the Shawnee Senior Center.

“I really want to do something here in Shawnee, especially for non-traditional students, teenagers, adults,” Johnson said. “That’s a big love of mine, and unfortunately we don’t have much of that yet.”

The grand opening is August 10 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Relevé Studio in Shawnee Mall, Suite 1368. The kids’ ballet demo will start at 5:30 p.m., the teen and adult ballet demo will start at 6:30 p.m., and the teen and adult ballroom demo will start at 7:30 p.m.

No special gear is required for the demo classes.
