Since Thursday was the first day of school for some in Shawnee, the Shawnee Fire Department had some trucks out near Grove Elementary School to help remind drivers to watch out for pedestrians, minimize distractions, and slow down in school zones.

“It only adds a few seconds to your drive time to slow down and obey the speed limit in a school zone, and that could save a life,” said Shawnee Fire Marshal David Anderson. “We plan to do this at other schools when they open in a few weeks.”

Putting the trucks near the school site was the idea of Shawnee's new fire Chief, Rodney Foster.
