Next week, on Friday evening (Aug. 16), downtown's regular Block Party is going to sport a whole new flair — or old, depending on how one chooses to look at it — or wear it.

In a callout to all hippies at-heart, Shawneestock is set to have a gas on Main Street.

The far-out celebration, hosted by Safe Events for Families (SEFF), will pay special tribute to the famed Woodstock festival on its 50th anniversary.

This particular gig, however, will just be a fraction of the original three-day flower-power party; Shawneestock hipsters will come together on the 300 block of Main Street from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

As usual, some tight vendors will be stoked to sell food for some scratch.

Bolt said the late '60s-themed party is where it's at — it's shown lots of support on social media.

“There are over 2,200 who have expressed interest in coming and there have been hundreds of shares on Facebook,” he said.

It should be a blast from the past for local baby boomers, but just as entertaining for those who aren't, as all the cool daddyos and foxy chicks are encouraged to be decked out in '60s attire as they groove to music from the same era. Don't flip your wig though, squares can come hang loose, too.

“There's going to be a hippie costume contest,” Bolt said.

And lots of prize drawings are lined up, too.

The fab band lineup starts with Jennifer James at 6 p.m., then Stumble East takes the stage at 7:15 p.m. The night will wrap up with Nasty Weather, playing at 8 p.m.

The costume contest, slated for 6:45 p.m., and the prize drawings, at 7:50 p.m., will be between performers.

Even though local youngsters don't remember the cool threads or counterculture from way-back-when, they will still have plenty to do for kicks at the festival.

Bolt said a bounce house will be set up, as well as the YMCA's Imagination Playground.

Bolt said there's still time to volunteer for the righteous event. Check out the SEFF Shawnee Page on Facebook to find out where the action is.
