The Avedis Foundation this week doled out an $80,000 grant to the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art (MGMoA).
“The Avedis Foundation is proud to support the award-winning Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art with this grant,” Avedis Foundation President/CEO Kathy Laster said. “The Museum is truly a community treasure, providing high-quality opportunities to local residents of all ages through various art-inspired programs and activities.” Avedis applauds the board and the staff of the museum as they promote education and provide quality of life through the arts, she said.
This grant included funds to build three climate-controlled display cases to house its famed Tutu, and the Roman Era mummy — to be named Sept. 7 — and the sarcophagus. Before this, the Roman Era mummy had not been on display for 10 years. Now the two mummies can be compared and contrasted side-by-side by researchers and visitors, as well as still be viewed up close by the thousands of students who visit each year.
In the fall of 2013 the MGMoA received its first grant from the Avedis Foundation.
MGMoA Director and Chief Curator Dane Pollei said Avedis has been a tremendous partner in strengthening the unique education programs the museum offers. “This support has helped the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art impact the lives and the education of Pottawatomie County students,” he said.
A century old, Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art (MGMoA) continues to grow as it teaches generations. Through the exhibition of 7,000 objects — covering six continents and eight millennia — more than 18,000 students from 107 Oklahoma communities last year viewed the exhibits through programs teaching critical thinking, observation, supportive reasoning, empathy, desires to know more about other cultures, group cooperation and conflict resolution.
The Avedis mission is to measurably improve health, wellness and the quality of life for the people of Pottawatomie County and surrounding areas.
