Steve Cameron Smith passed away in his home Sunday evening, Aug. 18, 2019, surrounded by family.

Born Nov. 6, 1952, in Shawnee to Phil and Jean Smith, Steve spent his entire life living in the city he loved so much, working tirelessly to help Shawnee grow and build and to help better the lives of others.

Steve attended Shawnee High School, graduating in 1971. He was active in the Shawnee marching band, drama, DECA, and was voted Wittiest in the 1971 Senior Superlatives.

Steve loved hard work and helped his father in his service station after school and on weekends starting when he was in third grade and full-time by the age of 12. Always embodying the entrepreneurial spirit, Steve opened his insurance agency in 1973, and remained a fiercely independent business owner throughout life, owning and growing his insurance and financial services practice, a service station and U-Haul dealership (which quickly became one of the most successful in the state with over 30 years of service), where he had the opportunity to work once more along side his father, as well as a Hertz dealership and small building solution franchises.

Steve married to Neva Fiegel in 1972 and had two sons, Dustin and Phillip Smith. Always proud of marrying a woman with the same name as the street of his childhood home, with Sherry Smith, his wife of 21 years, Steve helped raise Montana and Cody Pahdocony, and Lindsay Hernandez with his full heart and unwavering love. Steve also loved that he and Sherry shared their initials, SCS.

Steve Smith was actively involved in the Shawnee community, serving as a member of the JayCees, the Optimist Club (serving as president in 1990), and Kiwanis Club. He also served at City Councilman for Shawnee’s 6th Ward from 2010 to 2016 and played a pivotal role in establishing recycling services in Shawnee.

Raised in the St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Steve was an active Christian and practiced his faith throughout his life, especially in helping families in need and with a big heart for the homeless.

Steve was an avid traveler, taking several family trips to Florida, Washington, D.C., Colorado, Mexico and Aruba, Hawaii and all across the United States, and attended the annual Smith Family Reunion at Lake Murray for over 40 years, never missing a reunion from 1976 to 2018.

He is survived by wife, Sherry Smith, sons Dustin and Phillip Smith, step-children Montana Pahdocony, Cody Pahdocony, and Lindsey Hernandez, grandchildren Hudson and Mason, Nevanna, Evie, and Holden, Julius (JC), Aniyah, Abel, Davian, and Madyson and Carsyn, sister Phyllis Ford, brother Larry Smith, and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, at Taproot Church, 22 E. Dunloup St., Shawnee. In lieu of flowers, the family humbly requests donations to be made to the charity of your choice in Steve’s memory.
