ASHER — Trevor Martin hurled a dandy one-hitter as seventh-ranked Asher trimmed fourth-ranked Varnum 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.

Varnum earned some revenge in the nightcap, smothering Asher 20-8.

Martin registered 14 strikeouts and walked two in the seven-inning gem. He also unloaded a 2-run home run in the bottom of the fourth.

Asher collected eight hits with Michael McDonald doubling and singling. Jake Dobbs added two singles and Bryson Martin drove in a run.

In the nightcap, Varnum scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh after entering the inning up 10-7.

Varnum combined 19 hits with four Asher errors. None of Asher’s four pitchers could stem the tide.

Trevor Martin unloaded two solo roundtrippers. Patch Hamilton and Dobbs recorded two singles.

Asher, 9-10, will play host to Byng at 4:30 Thursday. The Indians will engage Whitesboro and Calera Friday at the Murray State Festival.
