The aptly-named Titans of Carl Albert, winners of 38 consecutive games, will take on Shawnee at 7:30 tonight at Jim Thorpe Stadium.
Not since Oct. 6, 2016 has Carl Albert dropped a game. The Titans, 2-0 this season, are gunning for their fourth straight Class 5A state title.
After blanking Midwest City 31-0 in its opener, Carl Albert defeated Del City 49-19 last Friday night.
Shawnee is coming off a 33-23 home win over Guthrie Friday, Sept. 6 after losing its opener at Choctaw, 49-21.
Against Guthrie, Shawnee rushed for 208 yards on 35 carries, a 5.9-yard average. Demetress Beavers carried the ball 17 times for a Shawnee-high 140 yards, including a 10-yard TD.
SHS quarterback Dre’ Evans threw touchdown passes of 51 yards to Zane Christopher and 23 yards to Jaylon Orange. Orange also had a 1-yard scoring run.
Senior Cyn’Cere Spencer earned the clinching touchdown, a 1-yard run, with 1:34 to play.
Against Del City, Carl Albert’s Taylor Jayvelon returned the opening kickoff 91 yards to paydirt.
Carl Albert led 35-0 at halftime as junior quarterback Ben Harris threw two TD passes — a 14-yarder to Rico Windham and a 20-yarder to Xavier Thomas. Harris has been Carl Albert’s starting quarterback since his freshman season.
The Titans forced Del City into four turnovers while playing turnover-free.
Javion Hunt posted touchdown runs of 10, 1 and 1 yards.
Carl Albert, which hasn’t allowed a first-half point through two games, returned nine defensive starters from last year’s squad.
In the state’s 11-man football circle, Wagoner possesses Oklahoma’s consecutive-win record at 48.
Tonight’s game will mark the end of Shawnee’s regular-season non-district schedule.
