LATTA – Palmer Jones poured in a game-high 20 points and Ike Shirey added 13 Tuesday night as the Dale Pirates registered a 62-49 road victory at Latta.
Shirey knocked down three 3-point shots and Jones drained two for Dale, which improved to 2-0 on the season. Also scoring in double figures for the Pirates was Trae Thompson with 12 and Brady Johnson with 10.
“We played really hard and did some really good things,” said Dale head coach Jeff Edmonson. “We made some mistakes that we'll correct and some shots that I think we'll make as the season goes along. We had opportunities to put them away earlier. It was a really good win on the road and we had four in double figures after having seven in double figures in our opener. We're spreading it around pretty good.”
The Pirates overcame free throw woes while converting just 4-of-10. Dale led 13-6 after one quarter and 30-16 at halftime in taking control.
Lane Garrett led Latta with 18 points and Ethan Elliott followed with 12.
In the girls game, Lindy Nowakowski tossed in 14 points and Danyn Lang contributed 10 as Dale held off a fourth-quarter charge by Latta.
The Lady Pirates knocked down an efficient 12-of-14 free throws in the game.
Elaine Witt added nine points for Dale as Witt and Lang each drained one 3-point shot as the Lady Pirates connected on four for the game.
Taryn Batterton paced the Lady Panthers with nine points and Hailey Baber ended up with eight.
The next action for Dale will be Friday at home against Amber-Pocasset.
