The Dale basketball squads opened play in the first round of the Bison Invitational inside the Noble Complex on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University Thursday night and came away with a resounding sweep of the Green Country Defenders.
The Lady Pirates won 78-33 prior to the Pirates’ 73-58 victory.
It took little time for the Lady Pirates to jump on top of the Defenders in the opener. Dale opened up a 17-5 lead after the first quarter and increased it to 21-5 on an Elaine Witt layup at the 7:21 mark of the second quarter.
Green Country then went on a 9-0 run to cut the Lady Pirate lead to 21-14 with 3:50 left in the half.
That run woke up the Lady Pirates who then launched an attack on the Defenders, out-scoring Green Country 20-2 in the final 3:43 of the half. Lindy Nowakowski and Danyn Lang spurred the run. Lang scored eight straight points during that stretch and Nowakowski tallied six.
Nowakowski led all scorers with 15 points in the contest.
Dale continued to pour it on in the second half. The Lady Pirates led 63-29 after the third quarter and coasted to the 78-33 first round win.
Witt added a dozen for the Lady Pirates while Lang and Miya Miller chipped in 10 each.
Kana Rackley led Green Country in scoring with 11 points.
In the boys' game, Dale jumped out to a 14-2 lead, before the Defenders chipped away to cut the deficit to 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.
That margin didn’t last long, as Dale cruised to a 44-23 halftime lead, thanks to some smothering defense and well executed fast breaks. Ike Shirey got his game going in the quarter, scoring nine of his team-high 19 points.
Dale extended the lead up to 67-35 on another Shirey bucket at the 6:49 of the fourth quarter. The Pirates’ reserves played the bulk of the fourth-quarter minutes, against the Defenders starters, and Green Country was able to cut into the Dale lead at the final buzzer.
Palmer Jones and Brady Johnson joined Shirey in double figures, with 15 points each and Trae Thompson finished with nine points for the Pirates.
Green Country’s Joseph Garringer led all scorers with a 32-point effort.
The two Dale squads will face off with Elgin tonight in Bison Invitational semifinal action. Dale will take on the Lady Owls at 7:30 p.m. before the Pirates and Owls face off at 9 o’clock. Both games will be played at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Noble Complex.
