The Shawnee Lady Wolves and Wolves try to get back on the winning track tonight by paying a visit to Piedmont in Suburban Conference basketball action.
The Class 5A 17th-ranked Lady Wolves, 9-11 on the season, will face a second-ranked Piedmont squad, which has won five straight, including a 50-37 decision over 10th-ranked Del City Tuesday night. The Lady Wildcats bring a 17-3 record into tonight's play.
Shawnee is coming off a hard-fought, tough-luck loss at fourth-ranked Carl Albert, 41-39, Tuesday night as the Lady Titans connected on a buzzer-beater to win it. Junior Aubrie Megehee and freshman Isabelle Ramirez each tallied 13 points to pace the Lady Wolves in a losing effort. Ramirez also pulled down nine rebounds.
Piedmont and Shawnee met earlier this season on Jan. 17 in Shawnee, with the visiting Lady Wildcats coming away with a 51-35 decision. That loss overshadowed a double-double performance by Ramirez, who poured in 19 points and grabbed 11 boards.
Delanie Crawford fired in 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 11-of-13 free throws for Piedmont. Tyeshia Anderson registered five steals for the winners in that contest.
The fourth-ranked Shawnee boys, 15-5, will be trying to bounce back from a 74-59 loss at third-ranked Carl Albert Tuesday night. Sophomore Jaylon Orange cashed in on an outstanding performance for the Wolves in a losing effort as he fired in a game-high 26 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor to go with six 3-point conversions.
Piedmont's boys, ranked 15th and entering tonight's action at 8-12, are coming off a 64-44 home loss to top-ranked Del City.
When Shawnee met the Wildcats back on Jan. 17 in Shawnee, the Wolves forced 15 Piedmont turnovers while collecting 12 steals in a 57-41 victory. Ka'Veon Sharp and the now-injured Joe Maytubby each had four steals in that game while J'Briell Easley totaled three. Tanner Morris led Shawnee with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Sharp tacked on 10 while connecting of 5-of-7 shot attempts.
Following tonight's action, the Lady Wolves and Wolves are home for the final time this season on Tuesday night as they battle Guthrie. Both Shawnee squads will then face Ponca City next Friday night at Oklahoma State's Gallagher-Iba Arena to close out the regular season.
