At least for the time being, the local rock-painting and rock-hunting club Shawnee OK Rocks is suspending the hide-and-seek portion of its continual, sharable art project.

Caren Glenn, founder of the local group, said rocks aren't being hidden around town right now to keep unnecessary contact at a minimum.

“As precaution with the COVID-19 outbreak we are suggesting that at this time, rocks are shared virtually rather than physically to prevent the spread of germs until all this has passed,” a Facebook post read last week on the group's page.

“Painting is a wonderful stress reliever and I highly encourage you guys to continue to paint,” she said. “It’s also something that can the kids can do while they are out of school.”

Glenn suggested members continue posting their art work online so everyone could continue enjoying what's been painted.

“It’s always a joy to see,” she said. “The rocks can be hidden once all this passes over.”

She said it's their effort to help flatten the curve, as COVID-19 continues its global spread.

The collective of more than 2,700 members is still actively painting rocks and encouraging the community in other ways, though.

One of the objectives of the group is to bring fun to the community.

Glenn said she has offered suggestions online for residents to write positive messages on driveways with chalk to encourage others as they stroll through the neighborhood from a good distance.

That's not the only idea on the table.

Sharing rock painting ideas and other suggestions are being encouraged .

“Our neighborhood just had someone suggest putting Teddy Bears in a window in our home for kids to see on their walks,” she said.

Some related ideas are underway, Glenn said.

“I was just thinking that I’d like to do a picture scavenger hunt,” she said Monday. “I’d like to take some pics around town and have people find those spots and take a pic when they do; it’s an idea that families can do and still be social distancing.”

She said she'll be announcing something soon on the group page. To make a membership request, search Shawnee OK Rocks on Facebook.

“You guys keep safe out there and go ahead make some great memories with those you love,” she said. “Keep on rocking.”
