Betty J. Chastain

Long time Shawnee resident Betty J. Chastain passed from this life on February 20, 2021 at the age of 91. due to complications of Parkinson's. She was born in Stratford, OK on September 27, 1929 to William Lester Wood, and Halene ( Gentry ) Wood. Betty and her family followed the crops west starting in 1937 for five years. The family then moved back to Stratford where Betty graduated High School. In 1949 the family moved to Phoenix, AZ. Betty worked several jobs, the Upton Candy Kitchen, Greyhound Bus Station, and The Palms Theater as an usher. She started her career with Mountain States Bell, as an operator. Because of a family illness they left Phoenix and returned to Oklahoma, settling in Shawnee. Betty returned to work at South Western Bell in Shawnee and worked there completing almost 40 years.

On a Charter Motor Coach trip to Hot Springs, AR she met Jerry Chastain. They were married August 23, 1980 in Shawnee and together they formed a blended family, which became 7 children, 18 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 1 great great grand child. Betty traveled with Jerry on several of his long charters touring the lower 48 and Canada.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and One Daughter Sherry Lynn, a Son Mike Durham, Grand Son Steven Durham, Great Grand Son Jace Ortiz and Great Grand Daughter Brianna Burgeson.

Those left to remember the love she had for her family, and the many friends she had, and of course her beautiful blue eyes. Her Husband Jerry of 40 years and her children, Karen Brasfield (Randy), Melita Ortiz, and Steve Durham. Step Children Michelle Glover (Jim) Debbie Herrin (Curtis) and Krista Boone. 17 Grand Children, 26 Great Grand Children, and 1 Great Great Grand Son.

There will be a Celebration of Betty's life on April 24, 2021, at 2:00 P.M.
