William C. "Pete" Ramsey
Shawnee - William C. "Pete" Ramsey, 77, a lifelong resident of the Shawnee area, passed away on April 14, 2021 in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
Pete was born in Shawnee in 1943, the first of seven children of William H. "Bill" and Bonnie (Vinson) Ramsey, at a time that his father Bill was away at U.S. Army basic training (later, a decorated combat veteran of WWII's European Theater). During the war, young Pete and his mother lived with his grandparents on their farm west of Shawnee.
Pete attended both Bethel and Shawnee Public Schools, where friends also knew him as Bill, graduating from Shawnee High School in 1961. He also completed two years at Oklahoma State University.
Pete married Gail Cummings, also of Shawnee, in 1963. They celebrated 57 wonderful years together in August, raising three children in the Shawnee/Dale area.
Pete spent most of his career in the residential trades in central Oklahoma. Drywall occupied his early career, but from the 1980's until his retirement in 2018 he operated Pete Ramsey Painting. With an artist's eye for human perceptions of color and symmetry, hundreds of homes in the Shawnee area still testify to his craftsman's touch.
In addition to his family, Pete's passion was fishing, a lifelong hobby first enjoyed with his father, father-in-law, and many fishing buddies. A true sportsman, he also shared the pastime with his children and grandchildren. He was also an accomplished fish fry cook, and hosted many events where, if you went away hungry, it was your own fault. He was a past member of the Shawnee Bass Club, and in the 1970's and 1980's he was active in competitive bass fishing on the Poor Boy Bass Association and Sport Bass Association circuits. Later in life, he found a new interest in being a sports and music grandpa, enjoying many baseball, softball and basketball games and orchestra concerts. His grandchildren and great-grandchild were the joy of his later life.
He was a Life Member of Shawnee Elks Lodge #657, where he and Gail and their family enjoyed playing golf and spending time with friends.
Pete is preceded in death by his parents Bill and Bonnie Ramsey. He is survived by his spouse Gail Ramsey (Shawnee); two sons and one daughter and their spouses: Aaron and Stephanie Ramsey (Tulsa), Shawn and Amanda Ramsey (Shawnee), and Paige and Mike Stith (Shawnee); seven grandchildren and spouse, Ian Ramsey, Makensi (Stith) and Jacob Aunko, Michaela Ramsey, Kolby Stith, Blake Ramsey, Paisley Ramsey and Parker Ramsey; and one great-grandchild, Tinley Aunko. He is also survived by three sisters and three brothers and their spouses and families: Rebecca and Gary Williamson (Arlington TX), Linda Pellam (Bentonville AR), Jim and Jane Ramsey (Shawnee), Cathy and George Ferguson (Tulsa), Chris and Regina Ramsey (Dallas TX), and Mark and Laverne Ramsey (Shawnee). Pete is also survived by one sister-in-law on Gail's side, Sarah (Cummings) Gariss (Coweta).
Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family suggests donations be made in Pete's honor to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation at www.alzinfo.org or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children at https://donate.lovetotheresue.org/.
In accordance with Pete's wishes, instead of a funeral service there will be an informal, come-and-go Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 15, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at LakeSide Wedding Venue at Shawnee Twin Lakes (formerly the Shawnee Home Builders Association cabin).
