Gloria Doris Taylor
Shawnee - Gloria Doris Taylor, Shawnee, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2021, at the age of 84. During the final stages of her illness, her family moved her from Avonlea Assisted Living to her daughter Renee's house where her family spent Gloria's last days together; laughing, crying and remembering her amazing life.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, four brothers, a son-in-law, a great grandson, and her husband Bill.
Gloria is survived by her son Jimmy Brock and wife Clarice; daughter Renee Steward; daughter Twana Griffith and husband Matt; grandchildren Will Steward and wife Allison, Stewy Steward and wife Sarah, Tyler Brock, Mallory Brock, Hadley and Morley Griffith; great grandchildren Reese Steward, Kynleigh Brock, Harper and Hayven Steward and Eli Duggan; numerous nieces and nephews; and Bill's children and grandchildren.
Gloria was born May 31, 1937 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Henry and Juanita Columbus. Gloria began working at an early age in the cotton fields of Seminole County and helping to raise her brothers, Richard, Tito, Henry and Clarence. This began a strong work ethic that carried through her entire life.
On December 31, 1957, Gloria married Jim Brock. From that union, came the three greatest joys of her life; her children - Jimmy, Renee and Twana.
She continued to work hard, often working multiple jobs to make sure her family had everything they needed. In the beginning, Gloria was a homemaker, but earned extra money babysitting neighborhood kids, selling Tupperware and making macrame to name a few of her many enterprises.
Always the cook, she also worked cafeteria jobs outside the home including at the Shawnee K-Mart as manager, and for Shawnee Public Schools in the Junior High School and then at Jefferson elementary school until her retirement in 1996.
Gloria 'mothered' everyone and her home was always full of extra food, hugs and love for all that entered. Many of her children's friends considered Gloria to be their second mom. No one ever left Gloria's house without a hot meal, usually including fresh tortillas or homemade rolls, and a big hug.
Later in life, she married Bill Taylor, who blessed her with a beautiful retirement at Lake Eufaula where they spent their time gardening, fishing, traveling and hosting family and friends. During this time, Gloria and Bill met their adopted granddaughter Amanda Grunden and lifelong friend Rick Proffitt.
In the fall of 2000, Gloria committed her life to Christ and she and Bill were baptized at North Fork Baptist Church where they remained involved until Bill's death. One of her great joys was leading her Sunday School Class, known as the "Keenagers", planning and coordinating trips throughout Oklahoma.
She also volunteered at Gods Helping Hands where she received the Volunteer of the Year award.
After Bill's death in 2017, Gloria moved back to Shawnee to be close to her children and grandchildren.
Gloria's entire life centered around helping and taking care of others. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her entire family. They take comfort knowing she is home and at peace.
A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 12, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Liberty Baptist Church with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Gloria is under the care of Resthaven Funeral Home.
"Well done, my good and faithful servant."
