Shawnee - Betty Jean Peterson-Fernandez September 21, 1929 - July 21, 2021

Betty Jean Peterson Fernandez daughter of Frank and Darlene Peterson of Rippey, Iowa passed away July 21st, 2021, at Wickshire Senior Living Norman, Oklahoma. She was 91 years of age. Betty grew up in Iowa on a farm and attended Rippey Consolidated High School and was a 1946 graduate. Her activities included piano, clarinet, basketball, theater, and she was class Valedictorian. She continued her education at the University of Iowa graduating in 1950 with a Liberal Arts degree with emphasis in Speech. Betty was an active member of the Forensic Association, Delta Sigma Rho, and SUI debate team, actively participating in debates in the Western Conference Debate League. Betty debated under the distinguished Dr. A. Craig Baird at the University of Iowa. She was one the first women to debate against West Point Military Academy and other accomplishments included competing and scoring superior ratings at debate conferences not only at her alma mater the University of Iowa but also the University of Wisconsin, University of Indiana, and Northwestern University Chicago. She was the recipient of the prestigious Frank O. Lowden Award for debate her senior year 1950. After graduating she taught English and Speech for the Independent School District of Atlantic, in Cass County Iowa. Betty met her husband J. Fred Fernandez in Dallas Texas and was married on June 4th, 1954. Betty and Fred lived in the Dallas Texas area for several years before moving to Oklahoma where they resided in Shawnee, Oklahoma to live and raise a family of five children. Betty was a very spirited person with a love for family and friends. She was a member of St. Benedicts Catholic Church Shawnee, Oklahoma. Her joys and loves were her personal spiritual faith, church, piano, golf, reading, poetry, politics, her children's tennis, and her home and family life. Her aspirations for her children and their futures were great, wanting all of them to succeed in their goals. Her loved ones will always cherish her wonderful family holiday gatherings bringing them together for great food, yummy holiday cookies and laughter.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Darlene Peterson, Rippey, Iowa and her husband J. Fred Fernandez. She is survived by her sister Frances Shirley Peterson Page, Dallas, Texas; her daughter Linda Vaughan and husband Michael; her granddaughter Kara of Norman, Oklahoma; son Michael Fernandez and wife Elizabeth; her grandchildren John Michael and Erin of Dallas, Texas; son Paul Fernandez and wife Tamey; her grandchildren Erik and Evan of Norman, Oklahoma; son Rick Fernandez and wife Patti; her granddaughter Morgan of Norman, OK; daughter Dian Siegmeier and husband Eric; grandchildren Calista and Jaclyn of Lee's Summit, Missouri and many family relatives and friends.

The family would like to thank the care givers at Wickshire Senior Living in Norman Oklahoma for providing Betty with gracious and loving care.
