Mark Howard

On Friday, July 2, 2021, Mark Huston Howard passed away after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 56.

Mark was born August 21, 1964 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Dr. Frank and Shirley Howard. He graduated from Shawnee High School in 1982. He then attended the University of Oklahoma where He received a degree in Journalism/Mass Communications in 1986.

Mark excelled throughout his career in marketing and advertising. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Marketing Corporation of America, AMRI, The Dallas Morning News, Brink's Home Security, Vizient (formerly VHA) and ultimately The American Heart Association all benefited from his exceptional skills and his work was recognized many times. Accolades - such as multiple Newspaper Assoc. of America (NAA) awards for excellence in newspaper marketing and promotions; VHA's highest award "Exceeding Excellence" in 2014; and The American Heart Association's ECC Global Marketing Associate of the Year award for 2018-2019 – were given in recognition of his skill and dedication to his craft. Mark brought not only professionalism and a deep skillset to his job, but also a sense of humor and fun that his associates always enjoyed. The close friendships he formed over the years with his colleagues, though, was perhaps his greatest source of professional satisfaction. Some of those relationships endured many years after the work partnership ended.

Mark had many passions. He was well known for his love of all things Halloween and his amazing costume creations were highly anticipated every year. His sense of style encompassed not only his own personal image, which was always immaculate, but also his home. He had a way of creating a space that was at once eclectic, classy and comfortable. A master green thumb, he had great success with all of his plants, indoor and out. He was particularly proud that his creation of a fountain and flower bed was featured in an issue of a well-known gardening magazine. He was a master at mixing a cocktail, and enjoyed them with friends and family at most gatherings. He loved all the arts, especially local theater and artists of all kinds, some of whom were close friends. Perhaps most of all he was highly passionate in his love of music of all kinds. His knowledge of music history and trivia was truly astounding.

He was a kind and compassionate spirit, always with a ready smile, kind word or humorous comment to brighten someone's day. Taken too soon, his absence will be felt by many.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Frank Howard, his mother, Shirley Howard, and step-mother, Betty Howard. He is survived by his partner Matt Osgood, his sisters Pam Garrett with husband James, Susan Brooks with husband Stephen, nieces Katie Segal and Hannah Lynam; nephews Dillon Hayden and Matthew Garrett; step brothers Brad, Richard, and Brian Turner, along with his "chosen family" of many loving friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Dallas on Saturday, July 31,2021. A second Celebration of Life will be held in Shawnee in October.

Donations in his honor may be made to The Dallas AIDS Resource Center, Genesis Women's Shelter, or The American Heart Association.
