Terry Callendar, 71, of Shawnee, Oklahoma passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2020, in Shawnee.
He was born July 11, 1949, to Elonzo “Lonnie” and Wanda (Byford) Callendar in Duncan, Oklahoma. After his mother’s passing, Terry was cared for by his beloved grandparents, James Monroe and Florence Byford of Duncan. Terry and his father later relocated to Hugo, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Hugo High School with the class of 1967. Upon graduation Terry volunteered to service his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After being honorably discharged, Terry enrolled at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing degree in 1976.
He would met his future wife, Susan Cheatwood, in 1975 while he was attending OU and working for Cox Appliances in Norman. The two met in November of 1975 while Terry was delivering furniture to Susan’s aunt and uncle. They were engaged in December of that year and married on May 29, 1976, in Norman.
Born a natural salesman, his early career took him from selling pots and pans, encyclopedias and Pepsi products to appliances, electronics and furniture in later years. His career eventually led him back to his Southeastern Oklahoma roots when he was hired to manage the newly opened Sight ‘n’ Sound in Durant in 1992. Terry concluded his career as the marketing director for a Nationwide appliance and electronics buying group, sharing his knowledge and experience in the industry with those just beginning their journey.
Terry was very proud of his two sons and adored his six grandchildren. He never met a stranger and absolutely loved to talk. His passions were OU football, Labrador retrievers, woodworking, and golf. He loved building little trinkets for his family, especially his grandkids, and until his health deteriorated, Terry could be found on the course at the Shawnee Elks Lodge every weekend, and most weekdays, playing a round or two with his closest friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his beloved golf cart riding dog, Jack.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 43 years, Susan Callendar of the home; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Steven and Shannon Callendar of Edmond, and James and Amber Pratt of Durant; six grandchildren, Brady Callendar, Carter Callendar, Ava Callendar, Jarett Pratt, Addison Pratt and Allison Pratt; two aunts and one uncle, Lestine and Scott Fowler and Shirley Reed; sister-in-law, Judy Cheatwood; and many loving friends and extended family.
Graveside memorial services will be announced at a later date.
