CHICKASHA – Southwestern Christian erased an early deficit to post a 16-6 win over St. Gregory’s Friday in a Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament elimination game at Bill Smith Ballpark. The Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak overall, winning for the third time in four tries against the Cavaliers this season.
The loss ended SGU’s 2016 campaign at 21-34 – only two wins shy of tying a program mark for victories in a season.
The Cavs exploded out of the gates, sending 12 hitters to the plate as part of a six-run first inning. Both Tyler Hebert and David Martinez had a two-RBI doubles in the frame.
But the Eagles rallied for 16 unanswered runs. After moving to within 6-3 in the third, the designated visitors got six in the fifth to take a 9-6 lead. SCU added four more in the sixth and three in the seventh to blow it open.
Martinez led SGU offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with a run scored. Vicente Rodas (2-7) suffered the loss after giving up six earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out three and walked two.
SGU was relegated to the elimination contest with SCU after dropping a 14-4 decision to No. 16 USAO in the day’s first game.
Yariel Gonzalez led a 17-hit attack by the hosts. He finished 4-for-4 with a home run, double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
The Cavs jumped on top early, plating one in the first on Easton Bennett’s RBI double. USAO responded, though, with eight unanswered runs. Gonzalez had an RBI double in the first and a solo homer in the fourth as part of that rally.
SGU stayed in it in the sixth when Adrian Soltero blasted a three-run home run to make it 8-4. It was his fifth of the season. But the Drovers added another run in the bottom half and five more in the seventh to induced the run-rule.
Martinez (5-8) took the loss after giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits over 3-2/3 innings. He struck out one. Soltero finished 2-for-3, and Hebert was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
