BOWLEGS — Maud’s Tigers didn’t need 48 minutes to fully vanquish Bowlegs Thursday night.
The Tigers of coach Bruce Harrell led 40-0 at the half en route to a 46-0 victory in their season opener. The contest was stopped with three minutes left in the third quarter via the mercy rule.
Maud, a Class B entry, led Class C Bowlegs 12-0 after one quarter on a 53-yard punt return by Devon Reid and Bryce Reid’s 5-yard pass reception from senior Kash Bodkin.
Almost the entire first quarter was played in torrential rain.
The Tigers added four touchdowns in the second quarter with Bodkin scoring twice on short runs in addition to recording 32 and 62-yard aerials to Reid and Braylen Brewer.
Maud’s third quarter touchdown came on a 14-yard pass from Brewer to Tarren Grigg.
The Tiger defense held Bowlegs to 49 total yards as the hosts averaged just 1.5 yards per rush.
Reid had a team-high nine tackles with teammates Rowdy McFall and Caleb Troxell finishing with seven apiece.
Maud collected 124 yards on the ground as Bodkin led the way with 47 on four carries.
Reid was also Maud’s leading receiver with three catches for 91 yards.
“We played a lot better defensively than we did our first two scrimmages,” Harrell said. “We went to the spread offense this year but we couldn’t do everything we wanted because of the rain. It was really pouring.”
Bowlegs, which dropped its season opener to Macomb last week, will travel to Strother next Friday night.
Maud will launch its home season next Friday against Sasakwa.
