MUSKOGEE — Bethel’s girls split a pair of Class 4A regional games Thursday and face a rough Friday assignment.
Bethel opened Thursday with a 5-4 victory over Sallisaw but was blasted 16-6 by Hilldale in Game No. 2.
Coached by Chad Smith, Bethel must win three games today to advance to next week’s state tournament. The Lady Wildcats will play Sallisaw at noon today in an elimination game. The winner of that contest has to defeat Hilldale twice to keep its season alive.
Against Sallisaw, winning pitcher Mya Green pitched the first two innings and the last two innings. She permitted two hits.
Maylin Hladik, who hurled the third and fourth innings, surrendered four hits and fanned two.
Bethel jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Hladik smashed a 3-run home run in the first and Avery Baxter notched a 2-run single in the second.
Hilldale was never pressed against Bethel after tallying five runs in the bottom of the first and four runs in the third. The game was stopped on the run rule after six innings.
Bethel finished with 12 hits as Rian Gamble led the way at 3 of 4 — a double, two singles and two runs scored. Four Lady Wildcats — Rachel Stark, Hladik, Avery Epperley and Baxter — connected for two singles apiece.
