KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Thiago Dos Santos set an Oklahoma Baptist single match record with five goals scored as the Bison defeated Houghton College 7-4 to wrap up pool play at the NCCAA National Championship Tuesday afternoon.
Dos Santos, a freshman from Natal, Brazil, bested the previous record of four goals, set by Marcos Silva on Sept. 1, 2004. In addition to setting a new watermark for goals scored in a match, Dos Santos now also owns the record for most points in a match at 10. Silva and Amaury Nunes were tied for the program lead with nine points each, both coming in the same match on Sept. 1, 2004.
Dos Santos scored early and often, netting his first in the seventh minute off a cross from Vicente Castillo. With the match tied at 1-1, Luis Romero put OBU back on the high side with a goal in the 28th minute. Romero ran down a through ball from Jonathan Martinez to chip it home over the keeper from 15 yards out. The Highlanders (11-6-4) scored three unanswered goals to close out the first half and take a 4-2 lead at intermission.
Matthew Giudice scored his sixth goal of the season midway through the second half, finishing a cross from Romero in the box. Dos Santos then took over the match, scoring four straight unassisted goals over the next 21 minutes. He twice outran the defense to beat the keeper and also scored off a deflection from 20 yards out during the stretch, giving him a team-high 17 goals on the season.
Bronson Wise played the first half in goal, allowing four goals while making one save. Thomas Ackernecht finished out the match, making one save in 45 scoreless minutes.
The Bison are now 14-8-2 on the season, and improved to 1-1 in Pool "B," with Houghton and Bethel set to close out pool play on Wednesday afternoon. Oklahoma Baptist awaits the end of pool play to determine if they will advance to a semifinal match on Friday.
