MUSKOGEE – A second-half shooting slump doomed St. Gregory’s in its Sooner Athletic Conference opener Thursday night against Bacone. The Cavaliers dropped a 79-60 decision to the Lady Warriors at the Palmer Center Gym.
SGU (2-6, 0-1 SAC) led by as many as 10 in a first half that saw the visitors shoot at a 50-percent clip. The Cavs enjoyed a 35-30 advantage at intermission. The second half was a different story, however, as SGU hit only eight of its 31 attempts (26 percent) – including 2 of 12 from three-point range.
After the Cavs’ Shanques Garrett converted a shot just seconds into the third quarter to increase her team’s lead to seven, the Lady Warriors responded with an 18-4 run over a six-minute span to flip the momentum and the lead.
SGU cut its deficit to three on a Lauren Godbold free throw later in the period, but Bacone put it away with 16 straight points over the next five minutes of clock time to put it away.
Despite the loss, Garrett posted her first double-double of the season (17 points, 11 rebounds). She was 7-for-13 from the floor. Kylee Tatum also tallied 17 points, while Godbold had 13 on 5 of 9 shooting.
Cierra Miles led the home team with 17 points and nine boards. Terri Baker posted 15 points for the Lady Warriors, who made up for a poor shooting night by forcing 29 SGU turnovers.
St. Gregory’s hosts John Brown (Ark.) Saturday. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Sumner Field House.
