STILLWATER – After a promising start in the lightweight matches Thursday night, things quickly switched for Shawnee in the higher weight classes, as the Wolves lost to Stillwater 48-27 to start their season.
Isaac Bertram kicked things off for Shawnee, pinning Henry Warren in two minutes, 40 seconds to win the 106-pound match.
Justus Sparks (113) followed up with a 6-4 overtime decision to Skyler Lancaster to give the Wolves an early lead, but the two teams soon started trading wins. Quinten Grass (126) won by fall in 1:14 and Xavier Grass (145) pinned Kyle Vandenventer in 1:32.
The Wolves lost the 170, 195 and 220 bouts by fall and forfeit the 182. Logan Clark ended things on a high note, pinning Sam Smith in 1:07.
In all, the Wolves lost eight bouts, five by fall. That's something coach Larry James said needs to change.
“We had some fight in us tonight, with some kids who haven't had much varsity experience,” he said.
“But we gave up too many pins. We have to stay off our backs.”
The Wolves host Ada Tuesday for homecoming and will host the Shawnee Duals next Friday and Saturday.
