SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist received its first-ever Great American Conference Sportsmanship Award with the Lady Bison softball team taking the honor, the league announced Monday.
The winners of the GAC Team Sportsmanship Awards were chosen by league officials and coaches based on a point system.
"We're grateful to receive this recognition," said Lady Bison Coach Pam Fink. "I think it reflects the values of OBU put into action by our team, coaches, fans and administrators."
The GAC announced seven award winners. Along with OBU in softball, Harding won in men's and women's basketball, men's golf and baseball. Southwestern Oklahoma State won in women's golf and Arkansas Tech won in women's tennis.
"These awards serve as a reflection the NCAA Division II emphasis on sportsmanship and game environment," GAC Commissioner Will Prewitt said. "These selected programs have competed with dignity and class and have represented the GAC in a manner worthy of public admiration."
In 2012, The GAC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee initiated a sportsmanship award to be presented for all team sports. The winning school will receive a banner similar to the one presented to GAC tournament championship winners. The goal of the program is for member institutions to promote good sportsmanship among its teams, fans, and all involved with the events.
