SHAWNEE – The Lady Pirates of Dale hit a small snag in a 4-3 win over Perry but recovered for a 14-0 blasting to Plainview Thursday in the first day of the 2017 Chisholm Trail Classic at FireLake Ballparks.
“That's the best we've hit it in the three games [this season] so it was good to see,” coach Andy Powell said.
Tied and scoreless in the second, the girls rallied with five runs including a two-run triple to deep center from Delanie Manning to get going early on.
Up 7-0 in the third, Mikayla Rutland singled down the third base line to drive in two more runs and the Lady Pirates stayed on the offensive the rest of the way for the shutout.
Manning and Rylie Premo each drove in three runs and Rutland, Emmie Idelman and Mo Lam each brought in two. Idelman, Lam, Premo and Jobey Savage h hit a double.
Premo pitched two innings and gave up one hit and struck out one batter and freshman Danyn Lang gave up two hits and walked three in one inning pitched.
Powell expressed the importance of having his newer pitchers getting varsity time early on.
“They hadn't thrown a whole lot yet in varsity innings, so [we wanted to] get them some experience,” he said.
The Dale girls led 3-0 after five against Perry but gave up three runs in the top of the sixth to tie things up. The Lady Pirates pulled together again in the seventh for the walk-off.
Manning pitched the complete game and gave up three hits while striking out nine. None of the runs against her were earned.
Lam hit two singles and drove in two runs to lead the Lady Pirates in the Perry game. Manning and Lacey Savage each had an RBI single and London Calvillo had two singles.
The Lady Pirates had a rocky start to the season in the tournament last year where they were handed two of their total four losses for the season, the last coming in the finals of the state tournament.
“We didn't swing it that well in this tournament last year either and we ended pretty good,” Powell said.
The Lady Pirates (3-0) will continue their tournament run today with a game at 4:00 p.m. against Piedmont's JV team and 5:30 vs Pauls Valley.
