DALE — Gant Hathcock’s third home run in the last two games served as the game-winning hit Friday in Dale’s 9-8 decision over Roff.

Hathcock, with a runner on second base, one out, and Dale facing an 8-7 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, clubbed a two-run home run well over the left field fence.

“Every one knew it was gone,” Dale coach Jerry Sanford said of the round-tripper. “He hammered it over the trees. It was a no-doubter.”

Dale trailed 8-3 entering the bottom of the sixth but scored four times to pull within 8-7.

Dale accumulated 12 hits while playing errorless ball.

Hathcock’s heroics avenged an earlier 6-3 setback to Roff.

Bryce Crawford of Dale went 3 of 4 with two doubles and also took the pitching victory after going the final three innings. He permitted four runs while giving up two hits, fanning two and hitting a batter.

Starting pitcher Drew Reed, who went the first four innings, was touched for nine hits, fanned three and didn’t issue a walk. Reed also hit a home run to left field.

Blake McQuain went 2 of 3 with a double while Cooper Hunt added a double.

“We hit the ball pretty good,” Sanford said. “Overall I thought we played pretty decent. Roff is a pretty good team.”

Dale is idle today but will play Monday at Stonewall and Tuesday at Tupelo. Thursday through Saturday, the Pirates will play in the Roff Tournament.
