SHAWNEE – Oklahoma Baptist sent their seniors out in style in the squad’s final home match of 2017, claiming a 3-0 result over Southern Nazarene in the final Great American Conference contest of the year.
With the win, OBU claims the No. 3 seed in next week’s GAC Men’s Soccer Championships to be hosted by Harding in Searcy, Arkansas.
The Bison enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half, and laid siege to reigning GAC Goalkeeper of the Week Dakota Ellicott’s goal to the tune of 18 shots.
Luis Romero found the first hole in the Crimson Storm defense in the 29th minute after latching on to an early cross from Thiago Dos Santos on the right wing. The Spaniard tapped it in near post for his sixth goal of the season to give OBU the lead.
Dos Santos doubled OBU’s advantage in the 33rd minute after tormenting an SNU defender, turning him around on the right side of the box before firing a shot across the face of Ellicott’s goal. The ball bulged the side-netting and OBU would head to halftime boasting a 2-0 lead.
Play slowed down in the second half as OBU head coach Anthony Yousey cleared his bench. Despite that, OBU still managed a third goal in the 54th minute. Following a handball in the box by SNU, David Estrada converted from the penalty spot to put the finishing touches on the night.
Senior goalkeepers Thomas Ackerknecht and Colin Spencer combined for the clean sheet, with Ackerknecht recording six saves on the night.
The Bison’s five seniors were honored prior to the match: Ackerknecht, Josue De Paz, Estrada, Romero and Spencer.
