The Hornets of Macomb had a successful opening night to the 2017-18 season with sweeping road wins at Wanette Thursday. The girls squad ran away with a 52-29 win while the boys won their game 48-39.
Darian Rougeux led the Hornets with 14 points in the boys 48-39 opening-day victory.
The teams were tied at 7-7 after the first quarter, but Macomb powered ahead with a 20-11 run in the second to take a 27-18 advantage into the half. They kept the rally going with a 14-10 run in the third and Wanette won out of the fourth quarter 11-7.
Behind Rougeux, Emmett McNutt and Andrew Boydstun had seven points apiece and Kolby Withee had six. Ian Horn and Caleb Browning each had five and Coby Mason contributed four.
The girls doubled up on Wanette 10-5 after the first quarter and went into the half with a 27-12 advantage before returning to outscore Wanette 12-8 in the third.
Kelsey Dillon led the Lady Hornets with 15 points followed by Ashton Powell with 13. MaeLee Hancock put up 12 points and Destinee Hernandez contributed 10.
The seventh and eighth grade team also came up with a 29-17 win over Wanette. Makenzie Swinney led the charge with 12 points and Peyton Powell had 10.
The wins put both Macomb High School squads at 1-0 as they travel to Peyton tonight.
