DALE – The senior leadership of Claire Chastain, Rylee Thompson and Mikayla Rutland led Dale to a 58-37 trouncing over Amber-Pocasset Friday night at home. The three have been great leaders for the team, coach Josh Forsythe said.
“I couldn't have asked for a better start to the season as far as how every single day we practice hard every single day, our attitudes have been unbelievable, they have really taken this team and shown them how to do it by example,” he said.
The young team was out of sorts at times but the upperclassmen never allowed things to get too far out of hand.
Jacie McClure drained two 3-pointers in the first quarter as Dale went on a 12-4 run and they blasted ahead 30-15 by the half. The ball spread out pretty evenly in the latter half and the Lady Pirates went 9-10 from the free-throw line.
Chastain and Rutland had 13 points apiece to lead the team in scoring and McClure had 11. Chastain had four rebounds and five blocks and Rutland had five boards. Elaine Witt had three offensive rebounds.
The new varsity members had a few miscues, but the bigger problem was that they played a little too agressively, Forsythe said. But all of the mistakes were fixable ones that he is confident will work themselves out.
“I think some of our on-court inexperience, were making just a few mistakes here and there, but most of the time it's mistakes that are being overly aggressive,” he said. “Whether they be a silly foul or a bad angle and a foul.... I can live with those things. Those are things that I think we're going to get better and better at.”
The Lady Pirates moved to 3-0 on the season with the win and will host Okarche Tuesday, November 28, at 6:30 p.m. Okarche (2-1) beat Calumet 57-32 Tuesday.
