WELLSTON — Josh Whitfield carved out 22 points and Dylan Thomas chalked up 13 as Meeker outlasted Wellston 70-61 Friday night.
Meeker (9-7) won largely by virtue of a 23-6 advantage in the second quarter.
Joe Coker added 9 points for the victors.
Thomas posted Meeker’s only 3-point field goal.
Meeker led 48-40 entering the fourth quarter.
A late rally by Meeker’s girls came up short as Wellston recorded a 50-37 victory.
Wellston was up 36-23 entering the fourth quarter, only to see Meeker go on an 8-0 run to come within 36-31 with 2:40 to play.
But the Lady Bulldogs struggled to score down the stretch, and Wellston padded the final margin at the free-throw line.
Junior Cierra Johnson of Wellston knocked down three 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 21. One of those 3-pointers stopped Meeker’s 8-0 run.
Ashley VanSchuyver was Meeker’s high scorer with16, followed by Aubrey Pruitt with 9. VanSchuyer notched six points in the fourth quarter.
Meeker hit 15-of-20 free throws for 75 percent.
“Johnson is a really good player,” said Meeker coach Clay Plunk. “Most of her shots were in transition or on open 3-pointers. If you leave her open, she will make you pay.”
Both Meeker teams will travel to Chandler Tuesday.
