CATOOSA — Dale’s 20th-ranked boys’ bid to upset fourth-ranked Ketchum came up just short Thursday night as the latter recorded a 60-53 victory in a Class 2A area tournament elimination game.

Ketchum, down 40-39 entering the final quarter, outscored Dale 21-13 down the stretch. Ketchum had 14 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter.

Dale was 16 of 21 overall from the charity stripe. Ketchum finished at 17 of 28.

“We couldn’t guard them from the free-throw line,” said Dale coach Jeff Edmonson. “We played really hard against the No. 4 team. We deserved to win it.”

Gabe Gouge of Dale was the game’s leading scorer with 17. Pirate Dallen Forsythe added 16 points and Logan Woodruff finished with 10. Woodruff and Trae Thompson fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

Gouge and teammate Brady Johnson registered two 3-point field goals apiece. Gouge tallied 10 points in the second quarter. Forsythe chalked up 11 points in the second half.

Dale went 17-13 on the season without one senior.

“The kids worked really hard all year,” Edmonson said. “They got better as the year went on. I am very proud of them because they played a tough schedule.”
