DALE — Visiting Red Oak jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 2 ½ innings and held on to upend Dale 6-3 Monday.

Red Oak is ranked second in Class A. Dale is ranked second in 2A.

Red Oak scored two runs in each of the first three innings. Dale notched two runs in the bottom of the third and a single tally in the fifth.

There were no extra-base hits with Red Oak collecting eight singles and Dale finishing with seven.

Leadoff hitter David Herring and Drew Reed, batting in the six hole, had two hits apiece for Dale.

Blake McQuain drove in two runs and Pirate Gant Hathcock recorded a sacrifice fly.

Of Red Oak’s six runs, two were scored by hit batsmen, another off a walk and two scored after reaching on errors. Dale was charged with three errors.

“We did OK at the plate,” Dale coach Jerry Sanford. “The kid they threw is really good. But there were too many walks, hit batsmen and errors. Too many free passes.”

Bryce Crawford and Jono Johnson of Dale stole a base apiece.

Dale starter Cooper Hunt, who absorbed the loss, surrendered three hits and two runs. He fanned four and walked one.

McQuain, who hurled the final five innings, was touched for five hits and two runs (one earned). He chalked up eight strikeouts and walked one.

Dale, 10-5, will travel to Christian Heritage today at 4:30, then compete in the Roff Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
