Senior Center Happenings: Center to host 'Beau' the therapy dog

Amy Riggins

Hello February! Did you know we will have five Saturdays in February this year? Yep, count ‘em, FIVE! This is very rare, as normally there are only four weeks in February, but with it being leap year, we’ve got this extra day. And, since the first of February falls on a Saturday, then, you guessed it, five Saturdays in February!

And to kick off our Saturdays in February, we have Pickleball going on each Saturday morning down at the Municipal Auditorium, located at 400 N. Bell. That is the building attached to the Shawnee Senior Center. Beginners can try out Pickleball from 9:15-10:00 a.m., and then there will be Paddle Play with a Challenge Court from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Cost is just $3.00, so come see what Pickleball is all about. No charge for spectators!

Also on Saturdays this month, the Square 8’s Square Dancing Club will be hosting their Valentine’s Dance on February 8, at 7:00 p.m. Dancers will pay just $3.00 to join in on the dancing festivities, while for only $1.00 you can enjoy the music and fellowship. They will complete the month with their second monthly outing at the Senior Center on Saturday, February 22 at 7:00 p.m.

The Diamond K Kiwanis group will be hosting their special Bake Sale on Tuesday, February 4. They will be set up by 8:30 a.m., and the sale will last until all the yummy treats are sold out. All proceeds go toward purchasing books and materials for the Early Childhood Center. These goodies are tasty, so you’d better get here early!

Speaking of treats, we will be celebrating all February Birthdays on Thursday, February 13. In honor of both Valentine’s Day and the February Birthday, we will have a decorated cake, snacks, candies, coffee, iced tea, and ice water available all day! If you or someone you know has a birthday in February, be sure to stop by to place your name on our February Birthday poster, which we will display each year. If you are unable to attend, call us and we can add a name for you.

On Valentine’s Day, Friday February 14, we will be hosting “Beau” the Therapy Dog and his faithful trainer Tony Reaves. Beau is a favorite, so be sure to stop by to visit with him at 11:00 a.m. on Valentines Day. You can say you hugged a beau that day!

We also have therapy dogs visit us each Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. The Doggie Spot brings by a group of friendly dogs over to hangout and see if they can make someone smile, so join us for lots of tail wagging.

February is the American Heart Month, sponsored by the American Heart Association, as well as supported by the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health. Heart health is important for all of us. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, did you know that heart disease is also preventable and controllable? Staying active and making healthy food choices can go a long ways towards having a healthier heart.

This month at both the Community Center and the Senior Center, free heart information flyers will be available so you can learn more about heart disease and healthy tips. You can also check out the Shawnee Library for free resources, as they will be opening back up soon!

We hope you join us this month for many free activities which can help you stay active. Our fitness classes are designed to help anyone aged 55+ regardless of current fitness level. I’ve heard people say “I can’t take a fitness class, I’m not in good enough shape!” That is simply not true! Come try out a class so you can begin to get into shape. If you have any questions about our senior fitness program or would like advice on which class to try, please contact us at 405-878-1528 or amy.riggins@shawneeok.org We have fitness classes at both locations, and we can help you get started on a basic fitness program.

Remember that any weekday individuals aged 55+ can walk or shoot hoops in the gym, play billiards, dominoes, or cards, sing some Gospel song, listen to great country music, work a puzzle, sit in on a craft class or just hang out with your friends. Bingo is offered on each Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Center, while the Senior Center hosts Bingo on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

The Senior Center at 401 N. Bell is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or you can call us at 405-878-1528. The Community Center at 804 S. Park is open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., and you can call 405-275-4530 for more information about the Project Heart lunch program. We hope you come by for a visit soon!

Be sure to tune in to hear more about Senior Happenings on the “Mike in the Morning” Show aired each Wednesday mornings at 8:35 a.m. on KGFF 1040 AM/100.9 FM.

As always, we look forward to seeing YOU at one of our CENTERS!
