Shawnee swim teams finish sixth at state meet

JENKS – Freshman Piper McNeil set a state meet record in the 100-yard backstroke, won state in the 200 individual medley and was part of Shawnee High School's 200 freestyle championship relay team as the Lady Wolves posted a sixth-place finish in the Class 6A State Swimming Championships on Saturday at the Jenks Aquatic Center.

Jenks won the team title with a a score of 382, followed by Edmond North (224), Tulsa Union (214), Bixby (195), Bartlesville (173), Shawnee (153), Norman North (137) and Deer Creek (88). There were 22 schools represented at the event.

McNeil clocked in at 55.49 seconds in the backstroke and topped the field in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:04.58.

Shawnee's winning 200 freestyle relay team with McNeil included Aspen Chapline, Eva Webb and Isabel Webb covered the distance in 1:41.12.

The Lady Wolves' 200 medley relay team of McNeil, Natalie Selman, Isabel Webb and Eva Webb posted a time of 1:53.74 for fourth place. Shawnee had a fourth-place effort in one other event – Isabel Webb in the the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.25 seconds.

Eva Webb had an eighth-place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 56.58 seconds. Eva Webb also had an 11th-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:17.65) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Chapline, Breanna Lee, Selman and Jordyn Sateren took 12th place (4:04.39).

Shawnee boys take sixth at state meet

The Wolves fared well in relays in capturing sixth place in the team standings at the 6A Championships.

Jenks won the boys' title with a 394, followed by Bartlesville (249), Norman North (221), Tulsa Union (187), Edmond North (183), Shawnee (116), Stillwater (95) and Edmond Memorial (90). There were 26 schools at state in the boys' division.

Shawnee's 200 medley relay team of Trent Ogden, Kiergan Gibson, Josh Coons and Brodie Morris clocked in at 1:41.96 for fourth place while the Wolves' 200 freestyle relay combination of Ogden, Troy Rakestraw, Gibson and Morris clocked in at 1:32.97 for fifth place.

Morris had a seventh-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:03.68) and a 10th-place effort in the 100 freestyle (49.56 seconds).

Ogden was eighth in the 100 backstroke (55.75) and 10th in the 50 freestyle (22.39) while Gibson placed 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.83).

Shawnee's 400 freestyle relay team of Rakestraw, Ryan Staal, Thurman Lee and Josh Coons took 13th place (3:41.37) and Coons ended up 14th in the 100 butterfly (56.51).
