McLoud’s upset bid comes up short
McLOUD — McLoud’s bid for an area tournament berth came to a conclusion Saturday as Harding Charter Prep rallied past the Lady Redskins 55-45 at a Class 4A regional.
McLoud was up 39-31 with 6 ½ minutes to go before running out of gas.
“We had a couple of breakdowns late but I couldn’t be more proud of our kids,” said McLoud coach Doug Armstrong. “We just came up a little bit short.”
Harding has one of the state’s best players in Kendra Gillespie, a state tournament Most Valuable Player last season.
Gillespie totaled 17 points Saturday.
“We really did a good job on her,” Armstrong said. “She was ranked the 31st best player in the country and has committed to Ole Miss.”
Junior Lexie Boyer led McLoud with 21 points.
Harding Charter Prep canned six shots from beyond the 3-point line. McLoud didn’t have a 3-pointer.
The victors scored the first 12 points of the game.
McLoud finishes the year at 12-14.
