Lady Wolves' soccer team wins season opener; Wolves fall

It was an up-and-down night as the Shawnee High School soccer teams opened the season Tuesday at Jim Thorpe Stadium.

The Lady Wolves got a quick goal, just 45 seconds into the match, as that score stood up for a 1-0 decision over Mt. St. Mary.

However, the Wolves surrendered an early goal less than two minutes into the contest as Mt. St. Mary went on to hammer Shawnee, 7-0.

Harris' took a long pass from Lillian Davis down the right side, controlled it right around right side the penalty area and delivered a shot to the left side of the net.

From there it was a defensive battle as Braunya Lewis made a couple of outstanding saves.

“We need to work on finishing our opportunities better, but it was a good win,”

said Shawnee girls' head coach Jason Merrell. “Braunya is a good keeper and had some really good saves.

In the boys' game, the Rockets' Eric Jaques had a hat trick with three goals while Devin Wedman scored twice.

Cody Smith and Lane Smith also had a goal each for Mt. St. Mary.

The Rockets shot off to a 4-0 halftime advantage before scoring three times in the second half.

Despite the loss, George Coons made several great saves for the Wolves

The next action for the Shawnee High School squads will be Friday at home against Midwest City. Girls' varsity action will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. with the boys' varsity contest to follow around 7:30.
