OBU makes history with NCAA Division II Tournament bid

OBU Sports Information

History was made on Sunday evening as the Oklahoma Baptist men's basketball team punched their first ever ticket to the NCAA Championship as they earned an at-large bid, earning the No. 8 seed in the Central Region.

The Bison will prepare to head to Maryville, Mo. to take on the No. 1 seed and No. 1 team in the country in Northwest Missouri State, the defending national champions.

For a program that won only 24 games from 2015 through 2018, the Bison, under second-year head coach Jason Eaker have put together a remarkable turnaround in two seasons after going 22-9 in 2019-20 and earning their first ever postseason bid as a NCAA Division II member.

Though the Bison dropped a hard-fought GAC championship game to Henderson State with an automatic bid on the line, it was what OBU did to get to Sunday that earned it a postseason birth as the Bison knocked off East Central before rolling the top team in the GAC in Southern Nazarene, 77-61.

The Bison felt the stress all day after Sunday's loss to the Reddies, but the committee pushed OBU through after an impressive resume that saw four wins over the top eight teams in the Central Region.

It was also a huge day for the Great American Conference as four teams earned bids to the NCAA Tournament in Southern Nazarene at No. 2, Southeastern Oklahoma State at No. 3 and Henderson State at No. 7.

The tournament will begin Saturday inside Bearcat Arena with the Bison taking on the Bearcats at 6 p.m. The Elite Eight and national semifinals will be held at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana on March 26 and 28.

This year's national championship game will be held Sunday, April 5, in Atlanta, Georgia.
