COVID-19 impact: SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital Shawnee suspends patient visits

Staff Writer
The Shawnee News-Star

As concerns over COVID-19 continue, SSM Health, including the St. Anthony Hospital Shawnee campus, have suspended all patient visitors to keep patients and medical providers safe. Many hospitals throughout the state are taking these precautions.

Shawnee's hospital president released the following on Sunday:

Dear Valued Patients and Families,

Our highest priority is keeping our patients, visitors, employees and providers safe and healthy. We have taken extensive steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community and we are adjusting our policies continuously as conditions change and guidelines are updated.

Effective Sunday, March 22 at 7 pm, we are temporarily suspending all patient visitors in our hospital. This will include closing all lobby and waiting areas and our Café will be closed to visitors.

Some exceptions may be made for the following circumstances for visitors 18 years and older:

Joyful Beginnings Labor & Delivery: one visitor per laboring patient and this visitor will be the only visitor for the entire stay.

Pediatric Patients - one visitor

Compassionate care exceptions for emergency and end-of-life critical situations or when a visitor is essential for the patient’s emotional well-being, such as dementia.

All visitor exceptions must be coordinated and approved by the leader on duty

All entrants must pass the screening process prior to entering the building. If you fit in one of the exception categories listed above, please speak with the leader on duty. Once you arrive at the specific unit, you will need to check in at the desk to obtain a visitor band. Otherwise, we encourage you to take advantage of technology to help connect with your loved one via phone, Facetime or video chat.

We understand this change is challenging for all, however it is necessary to keep everyone as safe as possible. I appreciate your cooperation as our greatest desire is to ensure your loved one is healing in a healthy environment. Please take this time to keep yourself healthy as well.

Thank you for your understanding.

Respectfully,

Angi Mohr

President

SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital - Shawnee
