Cheryl Jeanne Black Benton passed away at her home in Shawnee on March 16, 2020.

She was born March 22, 1947, in Shawnee to Wandell “Firpo” Black and Patt Ailey [Black, Mills].

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don Benton, her brother Cliff Mills and stepmother Betty Black.

She is survived, and deeply mourned, by her son Jim Benton and his wife Lisa of Tomball, Texas, and her daughter Valerie Benton Peltier of Shawnee, as well as her four grandchildren Emily Barrios, Lukas Benton, Josh Peltier, and Mason Peltier, a brother Chuck Mills and his daughters Christy and Carrie Mills of Collinsville, Texas, and a sister Nancy Casper and her daughters Nicole Kugizaki and Anna Casper of Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Cheryl was part of a large extended family and had many friends who will feel her absence keenly.

A lifelong resident of the Shawnee area, and a gifted and trusted accountant, Cheryl first married Ed Hooper but then met and married Don Benton in 1973 and they remained together until his death in 1986. She was a conscientious mother, a proud grandmother, a devoted daughter, and a loyal friend. She was soft-spoken and gentle by nature yet fiercely protective of her family. She had a ready wit, a keen sense of humor, and a shrewd ability to see the truth in people. The void she leaves cannot be filled. She leaves so many behind but goes to join so many others.
