Vicky O. Misa

Macomb senior Blaine Cope is a leader at Macomb High School and maintains a 3.94 GPA.

He has been selected as one of The Shawnee News-Star and Patriot Auto Group Students of the Month for March and is now in the running to win a car.

Parents are Pat and Denise Cope.

“I have had the privilege to get to know Blaine over the past few years; Blaine is an outstanding student who plays an active role in our FFA chapter, athletics and our community,” Macomb High School Counselor DonNell Riggs said. “Blaine is a young man with a lot to look forward to in life, and has the work ethic and ability to get it done while working with a wide range of people.”

Active in sports and academics, Cope is a four-year letterman and starter and captain of Macomb High School's varsity basketball team, Riggs said.

“Blaine displays leadership in his roles on the basketball court and as the FFA Chapter president,” Riggs said. “Blaine often helps teachers and staff and fellow classmates.”

Cope has served as a mentor at 4-H Project Day and has helped at various 4-H and FFA events and functions.

As a volunteer, Cope has offered his help and time at events like Wreaths Across America; Kiwanis Pancake Feed; Pottawatomie County Livestock Show; Trophy Auction; Pottawatomie County Free Fair; and Macomb Masonic Lodge Watermelon Feed.

Among Cope's honors and awards are State FFA Proficiency Award in Agricultural Mechanics and Repair Placement for three years; Richards Drug Award (2019); Tractor Supply Good Neighbor Award (2018); FFA Star Green Hand (local Chapter); Swine Achievement, Livestock Judging and Outstanding FFA Member 2019 (Local Chapter); InvestEd Stars Central Region Winner (2019); and Seminole State College Presidents Honor Roll (Summer and Fall Semester).

Cope plans to attend Oklahoma State University and study banking and finance.

Best of Preps 2019-20

For the third year, Patriot Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Chandler is going to provide a brand new Jeep Renegade for the Patriot Student of the Year to a student from participating high schools in the area.

The Patriot Auto Group is teaming up with The Shawnee News-Star to recognize the area’s best student.

During the school year, two students of the month will be selected by an impartial panel of judges based off nominations from administrators at the school. Those 16 students will be finalists to win the Patriot Student of the Year award and one will drive home in a new car after the News-Star's fourth annual Best of Preps virtual banquet slated for June 18. The remaining 15 students will win scholarships.

Each month administrators at participating area high schools will submit a nomination for a senior who has an excellent grade point average, displays community leadership qualities, is an active volunteer and displays high moral integrity.

Additional sponsors of the program include Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Benchmark Realty, Oklahoma Baptist University, Pioneer Library System, Immanuel Baptist Church Student Ministry and the Citizen Potawatomi Nation.
