LUTHER — A slow start and an even slower finish were too much for Meeker’s girls to overcome Friday night as they dropped a 69-40 decision to Luther.

Luther jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter, then capped the performance with a 22-5 burst over the last eight minutes.

Maia Wright, also a state high jumper for Luther, recorded 21 points and teammate Lauren Coats finished with 17.

“She’s about 5-8 but plays about 6-1,” said Meeker coach Clay Plunk of Wright. “She’s very, very athletic and we couldn’t keep her off the glass.”

Aubrey Pruitt and Lexi Lopez shared scoring honors for Meeker (10-11) with 8 points. Emily Trevino finished with 7 points.

Pruitt connected on two 3-point field goals while teammates Trevino, Ashley VanSchuyver and Liz Jones added one trey each. Plunk said VanSchuyer was playing at probably 70 percent after incurring a recent ankle injury.

Luther was 15 of 23 from the charity stripe. Meeker was 1 of 6.

“We’re run down. About four or five of our girls have had some sickness,” Plunk said. We need some days off.”

Meeker posted a 54-49 win over Luther earlier in the season.

Meeker will end the regular season Monday night by entertaining Seminole. Meeker will host Henryetta in a Class 3A district Friday night. Both the victor and the loser will advance.

Luther jumped out to a 37-11 halftime margin en route to a 73-37 triumph.

Syrus Grisby topped Luther’s scoring with 18. Also in double figures for Luther were Jesse Cole (17), Jace Wilson (11) and Tyler Becker (10). Cole posted three 3-point field goals.

Josh Whitfield led Meeker with 13 points. Justis Nelson added 8. Levi Hayes and Dylan Thomas netted a trey apiece for the Bulldogs (11-10).
